About this tour

Putu picks you up from Sanur at 02:00 and drives you to the trailhead at Toya Bungkah. The climb takes about two hours in the dark with head torches — it is steady rather than technical, but it is a real climb and the last section is loose scree.

You reach the summit ridge before the light comes up over Mount Rinjani on Lombok, with Lake Batur below and Mount Agung in silhouette. Breakfast is eggs and banana sandwiches cooked in the volcanic steam vents.

Coming down you take the caldera rim route past the lava field from the 1968 eruption. Back in Sanur by around 11:00. Putu paces the group to whoever is slowest, and she carries a spare jacket because everyone underestimates how cold the summit is.

Putu kept the group together and never once made the slower walkers feel bad. The eggs cooked in the steam vent are a gimmick but a good one.

Two hours up in the dark is harder than I expected and completely worth it. Take the jacket she offers — it is genuinely cold at the top.

Common questions

Around two hours up, steady rather than steep, with a loose scree section near the top. If you walk regularly you will be fine. Putu paces to the slowest person in the group.
Around 12°C before sunrise, colder with wind. Putu carries spare jackets but bring your own layers.
