The jukung is the outrigger Sanur fishermen have sailed for generations — a hollowed hull, a bamboo outrigger each side, and a triangular sail. Wayan's was built by his uncle in Serangan and it still fishes most mornings.
You leave the beach around 17:00 and sail out past the reef break. There is no engine noise, just the hull and the water. Mount Agung goes pink behind Sanur, and on a clear evening you can see all the way to Nusa Penida.
Wayan brings fresh coconut, fruit and a cooler. Maximum four guests so nobody is sitting in anybody's way. If the wind dies he will paddle, and if it is unsafe he will call it off the day before and refund you in full — he has been reading this stretch of water since he was fourteen.
